A legacy of Invention - Ray and Charles Eames

“The details are not details, we make the product”  - Ray and Charles Eames

Among the most important designers, Ray and Charles Eames are best known for their ground breaking contributions to architecture, furniture design, industrial design, manufacturing and photographic arts.

Ray and Charles Eames practiced design at a high standard and interesting way. From the 1940s to the 1970s they aimed to improve society with their furniture, toys, buildings, films, exhibitions and books.

With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasms into creations to create a whole new look of furniture to modern, sleek and sophisticated look.

In the 1940s, Ray and Charles Eames started the process with molded plywood chairs. The Eameses’ moulded plywood chair was their first attempt to create a single shell that would be comfortable without padding and that could be mass produced. In the early 1940s, the Eameses started to experiment with this concept which led them to discover that plywood did not withstand the stresses produced between the seat and back, so they decided to abandon the single shell idea and replacing it with  another concept of a two-piece chair with separate moulded plywood panels for seat and back.

Inspired by trays, dress forms, baskets and animal traps, the Eameses experimented with bent and welded wire mesh. Innovative techniques were developed to mass produce upholstery and special moulds and be created as forms. The wire chairs are still being produced.

Ray and Charles Eames achieved their success by taking each project the same way. They loved their work which was a combination of success.

The impact that they left on today's' designers is incredible. Designers are being influenced by these incredible artists and mostly by their work.

Nowadays you can find a replica of the chairs Ray and Charles Eames did. You can still find the originals but you can also find the replica of the originals in Malta. As I was doing my research on the internet, I came by a Maltese website which have some particular chairs including other famous designers. You can find a replica of the Eames lounge chair at The Point, Sliema.

A design critic once said that this extraordinary couple “just wanted to make the world a better place.”
